FOGO Processing Plant Getting Tough on Contamination
Bunbury Harvey Regional Council (BHRC) has advised the Local Governments in the South West, effective immediately from Monday, 2 December, trucks presenting with FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) product containing unacceptable levels of contamination will be directed to landfill for disposal.
BHRC manage an Organics Processing Facility in Dardanup which processes FOGO waste collected throughout the South West, including the Shire of Augusta Margaret River. Their decision is in response to high contamination volumes exceeding the decontamination capacity of the processing facility.
Until further notice, the Shire’s Collection Contractor (Cleanaway) will assess the load going into the truck, and if contamination levels are too high, the load will be taken to landfill.
There will be no change to the collection frequencies and residents are asked to continue to use their lime green lid FOGO bin for organic matter only for their weekly collections. However everyone in our community plays an important role in reducing FOGO contamination and its we all need to separate general waste and recycling from FOGO correctly to ensure as little contamination as possible.
Further information and tips can be found at the FOGO page of our website on the Shire’s website
The Shire remains committed to the important role FOGO plays in diverting waste from landfill and recognises that high contamination impacts BHRC’s ability to process and produce a high-quality end product.
