State Government Allowing Extend Use of Temporary Accommodation on Private Land
The Shire of Augusta Margaret River has applauded last week’s State Government announcement to extend the use of temporary accommodation on private land.
As part of changes to the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Regulations 1997, from 1 September local governments can authorise the use of caravans or Tiny Homes on wheels as temporary accommodation for up to two years, with the possibility of renewal. Previously, approvals were limited to just three months.
Shire President Julia Meldrum said the changes were a significant step forward in addressing the region's housing shortage and reflect the Shire's hard work behind the scenes with the State Government.
“The new regulations offer a great opportunity to resolve some of our local housing challenges, and potentially provide more options for seasonal workers and reduce illegal camping."
“Our staff recognised Tiny Homes as a viable housing option over five years ago and worked with the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to push for these important changes.”
The Shire will now work to finalise the relevant conditions and guidelines for these new approvals.
