Shire Councillor resigns

Cr Nicki Jones has resigned

Shire Councillor Nicki Jones announced her formal resignation at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 26 February.

Elected in 2023, Cr Jones' time on Council marked her first experience in local government. During this time, she has made a significant contribution to the community, advocating for our Shire, also as an engaged and dedicated community member, volunteering across sporting clubs, school P&Cs and other local organisations.

In her resignation, Cr Jones shared the following message:

“It is with profound regret and a heavy heart that I formally tender my resignation as a Councillor for the Shire of Augusta Margaret River. After careful consideration and much reflection, I have reached this incredibly difficult decision, one that I do not make lightly. Despite my leave of absence for personal matters, I had every intention of returning to the Shire and resuming my duties, however, circumstances beyond my control have made this impossible, meaning that I must now step away from my role. Serving this community has been an immense privilege. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside my fellow Councillors and the dedicated staff, representing the incredible community who make this shire such a remarkable place.”

Shire President, Julia Meldrum acknowledged Cr Jones’ contributions:

"Cr Jones has been a passionate and dedicated advocate for our community. Her service, though brief, has been impactful, and we sincerely thank her for her commitment and contributions. Cr Jones's authentic, thorough and energetic contribution to Council will be missed and I wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”

The Shire will consult with the Electoral Commissioner regarding filling the vacancy on the Council, with the aim of holding the extraordinary election as part of the ordinary election in October 2025.
